Attention hotdog lovers, because we have some bad news for you! Your favorite meal has proved dangerous and today we will give you the reasons as to why you should stop consuming hot-dogs immediately and find a new healthier favorite food.
They are cancer-causing!
According to scientist from the University of Southern California, children under the age of ten who eat more than twelve hot dogs a month are at a 9 times higher risk of developing leukemia, a disease that kills about 24,450 people in the U.S alone every year. It is also the leading cause of cancer related death in children and the most common cancer type that affects children.
You can choose giving your kids strictly limited amounts of hot dogs on special occasions, but keep in mind that hot dogs like any other type of processed food is bad not only for their fragile organism, but for the grownups too.
But, leukemia is not the only disease linked to hot dogs’ consumption. According to researchers, kids who ate hotdogs even once a week had a higher risk of developing brain cancer, which is also a common type of cancer that affects children and youth between the ages of 0 to 19. The American Brain Tumor Association states that It is also the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths amongst this age group.
Dangerous towards the unborn generations!
Scientists from Denver found out that the upcoming babies of pregnant women who ate hotdogs even once a week had double the risk of suffering from brain tumors. This was confirmed by another group of scientists.
Moreover, the risk is also high in children whose fathers consumed hotdogs before conception.
Recent researches constantly warn about the dangers of processed meat, but what makes hotdogs in particularly so risky for children?
Nitrites are preservatives that give the color and are a common part of hotdogs. They bind with compounds called amines in the hotdog while we cook them, and possibly with the amines in our stomach as well. This combination creates cancer-causing N-nitroso compounds, and not only do these compounds increase the risk of leukemia and brain tumors amongst children, but can cause the cancer of the stomach, the esophagus, the mouth, and the bladder as well.
Every processed meat increases the risk of cancer
The Registered Dietician Alice Bender warns that every processed and preserved meat contains the compounds mentioned above. Everything that has been smoked, heavily salted or had chemicals added In order to keep the meat last longer without going bad is considered as processed meat. According to the World Health Organization, processed meat causes colorectal cancer.
But, not all nitrates are dangerous. For example, vegetable nitrates don’t turn into N-nitroso compounds because of the presence of vitamin D or C. These vitamins stop the nitrates from binding to the amines, so there isn’t that risk. Hotdogs, unfortunately, don’t work this way.
If your love towards hot dogs is still strong, then there are nitrite-free alternatives that are still not as popular but can be found. You can advise your local supermarket to start the nitrite-free hot dogs on the shelves and help other fellow hot dog lovers stay healthy.
