Many of us know how much we can benefit from celery so it is included in the daily diets. But, there’s one thing you may not know about this amazing vegetable – it is also a potent weapon against cancer.
According to a recent discovery, celery can eliminate up to 86% of the cancer cells in the lungs. This is due to the powerful anti-cancer compound called apigenin that celery contains and is known to kill different types of cancer cell including ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, and breast cancers.
Another research supports these claims as it has found that women who consume plenty amounts of apigenin through their diet are reducing the risk of getting ovarian cancer by 20%, and breast cancer by 19%.
Furthermore, according to Chinese researches, the consumption of one serving of two medium stalks of celery 2 to 3 times a week reduces the risk of getting lung cancer by 60%. What’s till yet to be discovered is whether apigenin acts against cancer on its own or in combination with the other beneficial celery compounds.
Since the vascular endothelial growth produces a protein that stimulates formation of new blood vessels, but also helps the growth of cancerous tumors, apigenin decreases the growth of vascular endothelial as well as the growth of prostate, thyroid, leukemia and lung cancers.
By preventing glucose uptake, apigenin can also reduce the cycle of forming cancer cells in the pancreas.
If you still haven’t added celery to your daily diet, we believe that its anti-cancer and antioxidant properties, and being a great source of fiber can make you buy a stalk or two right away. You can combine it in salads, stews, soups, vegetable smoothies or salsa, the choice is yours.
