Cannabis is a well known herb that is widely consumed, mainly by smoking. But, a recent study has shown that cannabis can also be consumed raw, and by consuming cannabis this way, it will provide you with amazing health benefits.
The cannabis is definitely on the superfoods list thanks to having more than 400 chemical compounds containing essential oils, acids, and vitamins. It is rich in cannabinoid acids which are vital for the proper cell function.
THCa and CBDa are the most studied cannabinoid acids. These acids break down in various chemicals which become degraded into psychoactive THC and cannabinoid CBD when they are cooked, heated or vaped. This process depicts the breaking down of acids into an active form, and is known decarboxylation, or “decarbing.”.
Both THC and CBD can provide us with distinctive health benefit, but the human body can only use a specific amount of them. As explained by Dr. Courtney:
“We have a series of cannabis strains called ACDC. ‘AC’ stands for alternative cannabinoid, which is the CBD acid molecule, which has come into focus lately as being very important as an anti-inflammatory.
And ‘DC’ stands for dietary cannabis. […] If you do heat it, then your dose is around 10mg. And if you don’t heat it, if it’s raw, then your dose is around one to 1-2,000mg.”
When cannabis is consumed raw, the body processes much more THCa and CBDa, and through the metabolism, it can convert these acids into essential nutrients.
Studies have linked cannabinoid acids with the prevention of chronic diseases. For instance, endocannabinoid deficiencies could to be associated with illnesses including:
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Dr. Courtney stated that higher doses of raw CBDa and THCa are significantly more effective in their raw form to the effect of:
- Anti-diabetic properties
- Anti-ischemic properties (restricted blood flow in the body)
- Anti-inflammatory properties
Amino acids are found in large quantities in cannabis. This is extremely important because they support the proper function of cells, transport nutrients around the body, and repair damaged tissues. Our body is unable to produce them by itself, so we need to consume dietary sources that contain amino acids.
The U.S. government patented the CBD in 2013, once it was discovered that that the cannabinoid has impressive antioxidant and neuroprotective properties.
These antioxidants prevent cell damage, thus preventing diseases and illnesses. It’s been also shown that CBD is much more potent antioxidant than both vitamins C and E. Raw cannabis consumption will provide you with higher amounts of antioxidants.
Dr. Courtney also advised to consume raw cannabis in the form of juices, or smoothies, mixed with other vegetables like parsley or cilantro.
