Removing mold from your home can be a tricky thing. While the mold itself is harmful, the mold removers such as borax and bleach, even though effective aren’t really good for your health since they release dangerous toxic vapors. But, luckily there are natural and environmentally safe alternatives that work just as well.

Hydrogen peroxide is a great solution for removing mold. All you have to do is take a bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide and a spray pump. Spray the affected areas and leave it on for 10-15 minutes; afterwards, take a clean towel and scrub it until all the spores are off. You could also make a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and vinegar, but you have to remember to keep the hydrogen in a dark colored container in order to preserve its properties.

Vinegar is another great and effective solution against mold. It is proven that vinegar can eliminate up to 82% of mold spores, as well as bacteria and viruses. Pour it in a spray bottle and spray on the affected areas, then leave it for few hours. After that, scrub it with a brush. If the vinegar scent is too strong, it is not recommended to mix it with water since it will lose its efficiency. Instead, mix some essential oil to cover the scent.

A bit more expensive solution is tea tree oil, but yet again, you would only need 2 teaspoons and it will last you for a long time. Mix 2 teaspoons of the oil with two cups of water in a spray bottle. Again, spray on the mold and leave it. For this, you don’t need to scrub anything off, just leave it to dry out.

If you have a sensitive nose and want odorless solution, then the citrus seed extract is perfect. Mix 20 drops of the extract with two cups of water in a spray bottle and spray the walls. This also shouldn’t be rinsed out.

Another cheap and effective solution is baking soda. Mix it with water in a spray bottle, spray on the mold and leave it for some time. Wipe it off with damp cloth afterwards.

If you don’t have mold problem but do want to prevent it from appearing, then wipe the damp areas regularly, occasionally spray vinegar, or buy a cool mist humidifier.
