Coat hooks can be found everywhere and are especially useful in changing rooms. But could you believe that such an ordinary everyday object can actually be used for very creepy and illegal purposes?
Quite recently Florida investigators discovered something extremely disturbing regarding public restrooms, Hotel rooms, and your privacy. Namely, the coat hangers are used as spy cameras.
“In all three incidents, miniature cameras hidden in coat hooks were found mounted on the walls in the women’s restrooms. They were found at Anne’s Beach on May 26th, the Circle K Store at the 99.8 mile marker of Highway U.S. One on May 28th and in the women’s bathroom at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier today.”
The investigators discovered these types of spy cameras on three different locations in women’s restrooms in the Florida Keys. They were in plain sight and no one would ever realize it. Motion-activated cameras that look like coat hangers have been found on the back of doors in several public restrooms, and who knows how long they have been there, or if there are more throughout the state (or country).
“Anyone who has a public restroom on their property needs to check them closely,” said Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “If you find anything suspicious you think might contain a hidden camera, don’t touch it. Call us right away and we will respond.”
With the technological developments cameras can get smaller and smaller and perverts take that into their own advantage.
“Nowadays, with the advances in technology, all you need to do is insert a MicroSD card,” private investigator Carrie Kerskie stated. “The battery life for these coat hooks, I looked it up, is two hours. Then, you just take it out, pop it in the computer, and you have all your images.
It’s real simple and easy. They just walk in, hang it up, walk out, go back a few hours later and take it off.”
What’s worse, these types of cameras can be very easily purchased and are widely advertised as as home security cameras – but used far from their actual purpose.
Luckily you can spot them if you know where to look. When it comes to coat hanger cameras, they look as any ordinary plastic hanger except they have a very small hole in the top portion. That’s the lens. Some even have a power button on the side to activate the motion detection feature, while others have a light that will be painfully easy to see if the coat hook is white but tricky to spot if the hook is black.
So, whenever you go somewhere public, either restroom or changing room, throw a quick glance at your surroundings and report anything that looks unusual. Stay safe.
