A cure for one of the deadliest disease of our times could be soon to be put in use! The method developed by scientists from Seattle is still being studied, but it sure shows incredible and promising results in the clinical trials.
Namely, the new method for treating leukemia that was developed by experts from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center showed to be effective in 94% of patients. The therapy uses the immune cells to attack the metastatic cancer.
Patients who were in the last stages of the disease and who were given only few months to live were put on the treatment, and after it the symptoms of acute lymphoblastic leukemia were gone. 18 months later, the results from the series of tests they did showed that the disease hasn’t return.
While the researchers still developed the treatment, they treated T-lymphocytes (a type of white blood cells) using special molecules to enable them to recognize and attack cancer cells. Then the treated molecules known as chimeric antigen receptors returned to the patient’s body through an infusion, completely eliminating leukemia.
The scientists claim that the modification of the T-cells has proven to be effective in bone marrow cancer.
“I think we’re at the beginning of something big. This is a real revolution! T-cells are ‘living medicine’ which in the patient’s body can survive a lifetime” says Dr. Stanley Ridddell from the Fred Hutchinson Center, who presented the results on February 2016.
T-cells are also able to “store” the cancer cells, so that in case the disease comes back, they can attack again and destroy it.
It is reported by the experts from the Seattle that it is still needed to have series of detailed studies be performed before the treatment is widely available.
Besides giving very promising results, the treatment will cost less than the standard ones and is quite simple.
