Sciatica is a condition that occurs when the sciatic nerve is irritated, thus causing pain in the lower extremity. The symptoms include:
- Pain in the rear or leg which worsens when sitting, coughing or sneezing
- Burning or tingling down the leg
- Feeling weakness and stiffness which makes it difficult to move your leg or foot
- Persistent pain on one side of the rear
- Sudden pain which makes it difficult to stand up
How does an ordinary tennis ball helps in relieving the pain?
The tennis ball method is quite successful in relieving the pain caused by sciatica. It is easy to perform and it includes massaging certain pressure points, acupressure and reflexology that provide sore muscles and muscles tension relief. The goal is to treat the piriformis muscle which is located in the area of sciatic nerve. This muscle pushes the sciatic nerve against the tendons beneath it, causing the pain.
The tennis ball regulates the blood flow and reduces the muscle tension and inflexibility.
All you need for this method is one or two tennis balls, depending on your pain level or your ability to balance. Either sit or lie down on the floor and place the ball in the muscle area where the pain comes from. Start to move your body gradually allowing the ball to move around the muscle until you locate the affected areas and then gently press the ball on these areas for about 15-20 seconds. This method will alleviate your muscle strain and take the weight of the sciatic nerve.
Remember that sciatica is not a disease, but rather a symptom that indicates spinal condition including bone spur or herniated disc. This method works only if it is as a result of muscle or pinched nerve.
