pH represents the measure of hydrogen-ion concentration. The levels of pH represent acidity and alkalinity of an organism, food or fluid, meaning the higher the pH reading, the more alkaline and oxygen rich the fluid is and vice versa – the lower the pH reading, the more acidic and oxygen deprived the fluid is. The pH range is from 0 to 14, with 7.0 being neutral. Anything above 7.0 is alkaline, anything below 7.0 is considered acidic.

A healthy body has slightly alkaline measuring of approximately 7.4. Of course, this measurement is optimal and a single pH value cannot be established since each body has its own specific pH value.

As for the pH in the human digestive tract, it varies greatly. The saliva pH is usually between 6.5 and 7.5. After chewing and swallowing,  the food enters the fundic or upper portion of the stomach which has a pH between 4.0 and 6.5. This is where “pre-digestion” occurs while the lower portion of the stomach is secreting hydrochloric acid (HCI) and pepsin until it reaches a pH between 1.5 and 4.0. After the food mixes with these juices it then enters the duodenum (small intestine) where the pH changes to 7.0 – 8.5.

Acidic environment in the body indicates that you suffer from some ailment. According to researchers, unless the body’s pH level is slightly alkaline, the body cannot heal itself. Moreover, if your body’s pH is not balanced, you cannot effectively assimilate vitamins, minerals and food supplements.

When the body fights to maintain its natural pH by storing excess acidic substances in certain parts or organs, it increases their acidity. This may lead to cell death or cell mutation and in worst case scenario, metastasis can occur.

Modern diets aid in creating acidic environments because they are mainly consisted of lot of sugar, caffeine, highly processed foods and alcohol. This leads to a poor immune system, chronic headaches, and fatigue, as well as a number of digestive issues.

Drinking alkaline water can be of great help with improving or keeping your health.

This water has a higher pH level than regular drinking water and many believe that it can neutralize the acid in your body. Normal drinking water is generally a neutral pH of 7 while water generally has a pH of 8 or 9. You can find this type of water in many grocery or health food stores, and you can also prepare it at home.

You will need:

  • 1 organic lemon (washed and sliced)
  • 2l purified water
  • 1 tablespoon Himalayan salt ( you can find it in any healthy food store)

In a glass jar filled with purified water add the lemon slices, but do not squeeze out the juice, and add the Himalayan salt. Cover the jar and leave it overnight at room temperature. Drink 3 glasses of alkaline water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
