The Chinese herbal medicine has been using Astragalus root extract for thousands of years for managing stress, upper respiratory infections and regulating the immune system. It’s been also known to increase the white blood cell count and stimulate the growth of antibodies, and create a resistance to both viruses and bacteria. Today, modern research confirms the health benefits of astragalus root extract.
Helping with type 2 diabetes
A study has shown that sugar extracted from Astragalus known as polysaccharides can decrease blood glucose and improve insulin sensitivity. The herb also contains saponins, flavonoids and polysaccharides that are effective in treating and regulating type 1 and 2 diabetes, which makes it a promising natural remedy for diabetes.
The Chinese already use the herb for treating liver cancer. According to one study, astragalus root was able to restore immune function in 90% of the cancer patients. It is consumed as tea (prepare a mixture by boiling 4oz. of astragalus root in a quart of water) which is drank twice a day.
Boosting the immune system
The herb can increase the lifespan of cancer patients by boosting their immune system and inhibiting cancer growth. It’s been also found that it has the ability to increase the number of stem cells in bone marrow and lymph tissue and encourage their development into active immune cells.
Repair DNA damage
Astragalus has the ability to protect DNA by protecting telomeres from degradation and increase longevity. Telomeres keep the DNA together while DNA replicates. Every time DNA replicates, the telomeres shorten a wee bit and eventually when they get small enough, the process of cell death begins, a process called “apoptosis.” This process is linked to aging and cancer.
Well-known for its anti-aging effects, this herb promotes tissue re-growth and eliminates free radicals.
